A seguir a relação de Livros de Barbara Schermer, conhecida como: "Barbara's Top-Twenty Recommended Astrology Books", com comentários:

"Every astrologer has her favorite books--the ones that have been read and re-read and that have been especially useful in teaching astrology. These are mine. I hope you enjoy them."( Barbara Schermer )

  1. Forrest, Steven. The Inner Sky. San Diego, CA:ACS, 1989.
My first choice as a recommendation for beginning students.Steven's style is psychological, positive, sensitive and practical.
  2. Hand, Robert. Planets in Transit. Gloucester, MA:Para Research, 1976.
This is one of the first books I recommend for thebeginner interested in starting to see astrology in action in their ownlives.
A "dictionary" of all the key transits that can occur, categorizedfor easy access for the lay student. Presents aspects as "Jupiter conjunct Moon" instead of listing by astrological glyphs.
  3. Greene, Liz. Relating: An Astrological Guide to Living withOthers on a Small Planet. New York, NY: Samuel Weiser, 1978.
Though harder to find than Forrest's book, this one is a gem for it'sskillful blending of astrology and psychology. (Frequently to be found inpsychologically oriented bookstores). Greene is both a Jungian Analyst anda respected Astrologer.
  4. Greene, Liz and Sasportas, Howard.
    The Development ofPersonality, Volume I.
York Beach, ME: Samuel Weiser, 19##.
The first in a series of seminars in Psychological Astrology, this book isfor all who are seeking a deeper understanding of themselves throughastrology. Until his death in 1993, Howard was Co-director, with LizGreene, of London's Centre for Psychological Astrology.
  5. Greene, Liz and Sasportas, Howard.
    Dynamics of the Unconscious,Volume II.
York Beach, ME: Samuel Weiser, 1988.
A second recommendation for this creative duo.
  6. Sasportas, Howard.
The Gods of Change: Pain, Crisis and theTransits of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
    London: Arkana, 1989.
Transits of these three outer planets often signal major turning points inour lives. Howard decribes in depth how we experience these energies andhow we can use crisis as opportunities for growth and development.
  7. Arroyo, Stephen. Astrology, Karma, andTranformation. Davis, CA: CRCS, 1978.
This is one of the mostdog-eared book in my personal library. Arroyo's book suggests astrology asa tool based on a recognition of its value for spiritual and psychologicalgrowth. He lucidly describes the concept of Karma, and how both transitsand aspects of the outer planets bring transformation.
  8. Arroyo, Stephen. Astrology, Psychology, and The FourElements. Davis, CA: CRCS, 1975.
Arroyo's earlier book comesjust as highly recommended. Written in two parts, Part I (which wasincluded as part of his master's thesis), examines modern science andhumanistic psychology and the use of astrology in the counseling arts. PartII is one of the best explications of the four elements and their energeticrelationship to a chart that I have ever read.
  9. Hamaker-Zondag, Karen. Astropsychology. London: TheAquarian Press, 1980.
Karen, who is a dear friend, has written nearly adozen books combining astrology and Jungian psychology. (She runs a fouryear certification program for both at her school in Amsterdam.) In thisbook she explains the traditional wisdom of astrology in light of Jungianpsychology. You can't go wrong if you buy any of her books.
  10. Star, Gloria, Optimum Child: Developing Your Child's FullPotential Through Astrology. St. Paul, MN: Llewellyn, 1988.
This is the best book on the market for parents who have no knowledge of astrology and who wants to understand the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual needs of their children. Any parent, teacher, grandparent, or person who works closely with children will benefit from this practical, well written book.
  11. George, Demetra. With George Bloch. Asteroid Goddesses. San Diego, CA: ACS, 1986.
Demetra's book describesthe mythology, psychology, and astrology of the re-emerging feminine assymbolized through the four key asteroids. Anyone keen on archetypalpsychology or feminine spirituality will enjoy this book. Includes an ephemeris of sixteen asteroids.
  12. George, Demetra. Mysteries of the Dark Moon: The Healing Powerof the Dark Goddess. San Francisco, CA: HarperCollins, 1992.
An exploration of the feminine symbolism of the moon, particularly in herdark phase. Demetra offers us a new way to envision this little understoodaspect of life.
  13. Guttman, Ariel and Johnson, Kenneth. MythicAstrology. St.Paul,MN: Llewellyn, 1993.
This book explores theconnection between astrology and mythology without the reader's need for abackground in astrology, the classsics, or anthropology.
  14. Cunningham, Donna. Healing Pluto Problems. YorkBeach, ME: Samuel Weiser, 1986.
This is my favorite of the books on Pluto--describing the Plutonian type, how it functions in the chart, and the problems that Pluto brings in his wake. Importantly the book includes many practical tools for healing those problems through affirmations, exercises, flower remedies, and more.
  15. Frawley, David. The Astrology of the Seers: A Guide toVedic Astrology. Salt Lake City, UT: Passage, 1990.
Frawley is a highly respected astrologer in the Vedic tradition. Here he explains the basics of Vedic and includes remedies such as gems, colors, mantras and and herbs.
  16. Tester, Jim. A History of Western Astrology. NewYork: Ballentine, 1987.
For anyone interested in the history of astrology. Covering the fifth century BC to the present, Tester presents a fascinating and scholarly study.
  17. Gauquelin, Michel. Written in the Stars. London:The Aquarian Press, 1988.
This book details the studies by Gauquelin, including the famous Mars effect studies which appear to validate astrology's basic premise.
  18. Moore, Thomas. The Planets Within. GreatBarrington, MA: Lindisfarne Press, 1982.
Not an astrologer himself, Moore has brought alive the astrological psychology of Marsilio Ficino, who virtually started the Renaissance. Moores book may lead you to the treasuretrove of archetypal psychology presided over by James Hillman.
  19. Tarnas, Richard. The Passion of the Western Mind.New York: Harmony Books, 1991.
The best non-astrological book written by any recent astrologer. Tarnas gives an archetypally rich history of the ideas that have shaped the West and ends with a vision of our potential that truly inspires.
  20. Riotte, Louise. Astrological Gardening. Pownal. VT:Garden Way, 1989.
Something a bit different--a lovely book for gardeners interested in planting by the moon's phases and signs. It works.

The following is a completely unscientific and random sampling of the favourite books of subscribers to alt.astrology. It was gathered from the answers to the following question, posted by L McKevitt on 24th June 1995:

I'm curious....if you were told you could keep only 5 astrology books, which ones would you pick (excluding ephemeris, table of houses, and other reference books)?

The following are the suggestions, collated by author in alphabetical order. The two most popular books were Reinhold Ebertin's Combination of Stellar Influences and Robert Hand's Horoscope Symbols. The other books which were named more than once are marked with an asterisk.

This list is now closed; it reflects that particular moment, and the readership of alt.astrology in June. In another few months, perhaps, the same question could be asked again, and a different list would result, no doubt. Enjoy!
